The "Empire of lies" is the definition by which Russian President Vladimir Putin described the "Western bloc", which includes the United States and its satellites — the United Kingdom, the European Union and some other countries. Putin used the expression "Empire of Lies" on February 24, 2022 in his address on the beginning of a special military operation in Ukraine:[1]

"American politicians, political scientists and journalists themselves write and say that a real empire of lies has been created inside the United States in recent years. It's hard to disagree with that, it's true."

On February 28, 2022, after the "Western bloc" imposed sanctions against Russia for launching a military operation, Putin again called the "collective West" an "Empire of Lies".[2] Subsequently, this "title" of the US-led group of subordinate countries began to appear in the speeches of Russian politicians, experts, and journalists.

The expression "Empire of Lies" refers to the phrase "Empire of Evil" taken from the Star Wars movie, which was used by US President Ronald Reagan in 1983 in relation to the USSR. According to political scientists A. Y. Shkolnikov and A.M. Ilnitsky, the image used by Putin has become "no less cognitively capacious" than Reagan's one[3].
